Turn To Top Hat and Tails Corp. For Quality Chimney Sweeping Services

Our main aim as chimney professionals at Top Hat and Tails Corp. is two-pronged: We want to help maximize your chimney’s performance, and minimize any potential safety issues or hazards. One service we offer that goes a very long way toward both: annual chimney sweeping.

Why Your Chimney Needs Sweeping

It’s not just that your chimney gets dirty as time passes. The deposits that build up inside your system over the heating season are potentially draft-diminishing, potentially damaging, and potentially dangerous.

The most direct explanation: As you burn fuel in your fireplace or stove, hot air, gases and particles rise in your flue; and when those materials meet the cooler flue walls, condensation — converting to liquid — occurs. That condensation forms creosote, a smelly, dirty, and extremely flammable deposit that layers and layers with use. When excess creosote is present, the likelihood of it igniting and causing a chimney fire increases greatly. During a chimney sweeping appointment, we carefully and thoroughly remove creosote and other debris, leaving you with a cleaner, safer flue.

But safety isn’t the only reason. Your chimney’s function depends on draft — the drawing of combustion byproducts up and out of the chimney. Think about what you’ve been told about the arteries in your heart: When buildup starts to accrue inside, blood flow is diminished, and the heart can stop working. Creosote buildup acts a little like cholesterol buildup, in this case, minimizing the proper air flow up and out of your chimney. And when air can’t flow the way it’s meant to, your chimney can’t do its job.

When Your Chimney Needs Sweeping

Top Hat and Tails Corp.’s recommendation to our clients is to have the chimney professionally swept each and every year. But we’re definitely not the only ones who urge that timeframe: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), among many other organizations and industry groups, recommend a sweeping if the annual inspection deems it necessary. Regular sweepings ensure that we remove buildup before excess creosote gets a chance to cause serious chimney issues.

What The Chimney Sweeping Process Is Like

When you think about what we’re doing — loosening and removing dirty creosote and ash — it’s only natural to assume that it’s a dirty and trouble-prone process. But that’s not the case at all.

Our team takes meticulous steps to ensure that your home is as clean when we leave as it was when we arrived, covering our work area with heavy-duty drop cloths and taking many other cleanliness measures. We also use state-of-the-art tools, including high-powered HEPA vacuums, to remove and contain deposits and ensure that no dirt or soot escapes us.

The process usually takes an hour to an hour and a half, and when our job is completed, you’ll have a clean chimney and a thorough explanation of the current state of your chimney system (chimney sweeping comes hand in hand with a basic Level 1 chimney inspection).

For a closer look on the process used by CSIA-certified technicians like ours, The Chimney Safety Institute of America has a helpful, step-by-step video that offers a lot of insight:

Our technicians also specialize in cleaning oil flues, gas flues and stoves.
